There is a set of 3DML Spots that are ready to download try locally. First you have to download Netscape Navigator 7.2 from the web. Then you have to download Flatland Rover as outlined in a previous blog entry. After you install Navigator and Flatland Rover you can download the 3DML Spot zip file here. Once you unpack the zip file it will provide a number of folders. You can start Netscape Navigator and choose File>Open to choose any 3DML file in the set of folders from the zip file. This should then load and run one of the spots that is available. Let me know if you have any issues. The next step is to update the code from Flatland so that it runs outside the browser and can run any of these spots as well as some older spots that are showing errors. More soon!
In Flatland various sets of blocks were combined into blocksets that could be added to a 3D spot. The original sets are known as basic.bset and basic2.bset. There were also sets for room interior, island and village creation. Many third parties created their own sets including one done in collaboration with EIDOS for TombRaider in 1999. You can view documentation for the blocksets by going to original.flatland.com with pages that outline the shapes and textures in each set. You can download the blockset files themselves by pointing to the .bset files. For instance, the basic blockset can be found at original.flatland.com/blocksets/flatsets/basic.bset which is how the blockset is included in a 3DML spot file. A best file is just a zip file. All you need to do to see the individual blocks of a blockset is to change the extension to .zip and then open up the folder. Inside a spot a blockset is included using the line:
I'm currently updating all the 3DML spot files so they will run off the flatland.com server. I'll upload those files as soon as they are ready.
It's been almost 10 years since I saw a 3DML spot running in a browser. This image is of the Abbott spot running today (2014) inside the Netscape Navigator 7.2 browser, circa 2004. You can find the Navigator installer by doing a Google search. You can then install the Netscape version of Flatland Rover by downloading this installer: http://original.flatland.com/installers/flatlandNS.exe
If you write to me I can send you a zip file of Abbott and some other test spots to run locally. I still have some server configs to do to get 3DML files serving correctly off flatland.com.
It's great to see the familiar Flatland landscapes again!
